Pohon aren dikenal sebagai tanaman penghasil gula. Gula aren diperoleh dengan menyadap tandan bunga jantan yang mulai mekar dan menghamburkan serbuk sari yang berwarna kuning. Setelah itu, dimemarkan dengan memukul-mukulnya.

Proses ini membutuhkan waktu beberapa hari hingga keluar cairan dari dalamnya. Bunga itu lalu dipotong dan di ujungnya digantungkan tandon bambu untuk menampung cairan yang menetes.

Di Desa Peron Kecamatan Limbangan Kabupaten Kendal,  30 mahasiswa Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unnes) kini melakukan Kuliah Kerja Nyata Pemberdayaan Pembelajaran Masyarakat (KKN PPM) untuk memaksimalkan potensi daerah kaya akan pohon aren tersebut.

Kepada unnes.ac.id, Ketua Pelaksana Anis Widyawati MH mengatakan, kegiatan ini merupakan Kompetisi Hibah KKN PPM Tingkat Nasional yang dibiayai oleh Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi. “Setiap mahasiswa peserta KKN ini mendapat subsidi Rp 400 ribu dan dapat bantuan biaya kegiatan untuk program peningkatan hasil olahan aren dan program kegiatan lain,” ujar Anis, Selasa (8/10), ketika menerima tim monitoring KKN PPM Unnes.

Masih soal gula aren, cairan manis yang diperoleh dinamai nira —biasa disebut legen atau saguer– berwarna jernih agak keruh. Nira langsung diolah dan dalam sehari dapat diambil dua kali, yakni pagi dan sore. Setelah dikumpulkan, nira segera dimasak hingga mengental dan membeku kemudian dicetak menjadi gula aren.

Kepala Urusan Pembangunan Desa Peron Kecamatan Limbangan Kabupaten Kendal Munadirin mengatakan, 70% dari 620 kepala keluarga di desa ini bekerja sebagai pembuat gula aren.

Di desa yang dihuni 3.442 orang penduduk itu, menurut Munadirin, terdapat pohon aren yang tumbuh subur diatas lahan kurang lebih 120 hektar dan mampu menghasilkan tiga ton gula per bulan.

“Selama ini warga desa hanya bisa memanfaatkan aren untuk diolah menjadi gula aren atau menjual air niranya,” katanya di hadapan tim monitoring.

Desa Binaan Unnes

Munadirin juga mengharap desanya menjadi desa binaan Unnes, karena menurutnya pohon aren di desanya sangat potensial dan produktif untuk dikembangkan.

Kepala Pusat Pengembangan KKN Unnes Drs Hamonangan Sigalingging MSi mengatakan, pengabdian ini sepenuhnya dibiayai oleh Dikti. Dari lima proposal yang diajukan, hanya tiga judul yang disetujui, di antaranya di Limbangan ini.

“Keinginan menjadi desa binaan akan segera ditindaklanjuti,” tegas Hamonangan yang juga menjanjikan tahun depan akan memprioritaskan desa tersebut dalam kegiatan yang sama.

Pada kesempatan itu, Muhammad Faid Akhsan, Koordinator Mahasiswa Desa (Kormades) Peron menyatakan, 30 mahasiswa Unnes yang melaksanakan KKN di desa ini mengadakan pelatihan. “Selain itu, menfasilitasi warga untuk kreatif dan berinovasi mengolah aren menjadi bahan dasar berbagai makanan,” ujarnya.

Masyarakat, kata Muhammad, dibekali dan dibimbing mulai dari pemilihan bahan yang digunakan, cara pembuatan dan proses pengolahan serta alternatif pemasaran. “Hasil olahan gula aren misalnya pembuatan sirup gula aren, grubi, gula kacang, ting-ting, permen caramel, dan bolu kukus,” katanya.

Mahasiswa KKN juga akan menjembatani persoalan pemasaran, di antaranya lewat kerja sama dengan koperasi, Departemen Perindustrian dan Perdagangan, dan Unnes Student Entrepreneurship Center (Unsec). “Kami juga akan segera mengupayakan agar produk olahan dari gula aren ini mendapat IRT (izin rumah tangga) dari Dinas Kesehatan,” katanya.
