Sebanyak 2.729 mahasiswa KKN Unnes akan ditugaskan mengabdi di lima kabupaten di Jawa Tengah. Kelima kabupaten itu adalah Brebes, Kendal, Pekalongan, Tegal, dan Wonosobo.

Dari jumlah keseluruhan mahasiswa KKN itu 2.000 mahasiswa mengikuti program KKN Pemberantasan Buta Aksara (BPA) yang ditugaskan di 14 kecamatan di Brebes.  Sedangkan 729 mahasiswa KKN  lainnya mengikuti program KKN Pos Pemberdayaan Keluarga (Posdaya).

“Brebes merupakan kabupaten dengan tingkat indeks pembangunan manusia (IDM) terendah di antara 35 kabupaten di Jawa Tengah. Karenanya, Brebes membutuhkan perhatian dari berbagai pihak, dan Unnes siap membantu pemerintah kabupaten untuk mengurangi angka buta aksara di Brebes,” kata Prof Totok Sumaryanto, Sekretaris Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian pada Masyarakat (LP2M) Unnes, Sabtu (29/10), di auditorium Unnes.

Budi Adjar, Kepala Dinas Pendidikan Brebes yang hadir dalam acara pembekalan KKN PBA Unnes menyampaikan rasa terima kasihnya kepada Unnes. “Saya mewakili Pemerintah Kabupaten Brebes sangat berterima kasih kepada Unnes yang begitu perhatian terhadap masyarakat buta aksara di Brebes. Pemerintah Kabupaten Brebes berharap Unnes yang menerjunkan 2.000 mahasiswanya untuk KKN di Brebes berlanjut hingga 3 tahun,” katanya.

Ditambahkan, keberadaan mahasiswa KKN Unnes diharapkan mampu mengurangi tingkat buta aksara di Brebes yang saat ini mencapai 176.210 orang.

Menurut Sutaryono, Kepala Pusat Pengembangan KKN LP2M, program KKN PBA mengharuskan setiap mahasiswa untuk mengajar 10 warga buta aksara. Itu artinya, 2.000 mahasiswa KKN akan mengajar  20.000 warga buta aksara. Sehingga ketika program KKN selesai, diharapkan jumlah masyarakat buta aksara di Brebes semakin berkurang.

KKN PBA akan dilaksanakan selama 45 hari dari tanggal 31 Oktober 14 Desember 2011.
