Pekan Olahraga Mahasiswa (POM) Regional I Jawa Tengah dibuka Senin (1/7) tadi pagi di kampus Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Maritim dan Transport (STIMART) AMNI Jalan Soekarno Hatta, Semarang. Ratusan mahasiwa dari perguruan tinggi di Semarang, Kendal, dan Kudus bersiap mengikuti 13 cabang yang dipertandingkan.

Pembina Badan Pembina Olahraga Mahasiswa Indonesia (Bapomi) Jawa Tengah Prof Dr DYP Sugiharto mengaharapkan, event itu dapat memfasilitasi mahasiswa dari berbagai perguruan tinggi untuk mengembangkan prestasi di bidang olahraga. Menurutnya, kreativitas mahasiswa tak cukup ditampung melalui kelas-kelas tapi juga perlu disalurkan melalui kegiatan di luar.

“Setiap perguruan tinggi menghendaki mahasiswanya menjadi pemain, bukan penonton. Pemain berpeluang menjadi pemenang, tidak sekadar menyoraki kemenangan orang lain,” kata pria kelahiran Banyumas yang juga Ketua Kopertis VI Jawa Tengah ini.

Sementara itu, Ketua Bapoomi Jawa Tengah Prof Dr Masrukhi MPd memperkirakan kemampuan para peserta dalam kompetisi kali ini merata. Berdasarkan pengamatannya, setiap perguruan tinggi memiliki cabang unggulan. Kondisi ini akan membuat kompetisi berjalan menarik karena tidak ada tim yang mendominasi.

“Kemampuan tiap peserta hampir sama. Masing-masing memiliki cabang unggulan. Catur misalnya, jadi cabang unggulan Unseod. Panjat tebing diunggulkan Unimus karena mereka punya atlet nasional. Karate diunggulkan UKSW dan UNS,” katanya.

Unnes sendiri mengandalkan cabang sepak bola. Berdasarkan rekam jejak selama mengikuti kompetisi, tim sepak bola Unnes lebih unggul dibanding tim dari perguruan tinggi lain.  Unnes juga mengunggulkan cabang pencak silat. Pada cabang ini, Unnes bahkan berhasil merebut enam nomor dari sebelas nomor yang telah dipertandingkan.

Unnes akan menjadi tuan rumah untuk dua cabang, yakni voli pasir dan sepak bola. Adapan cabang lainnya dipertandingkan di beberapa kampus lain. Tenis lapangan akan digelar di Undip, voli indoor di IAIN Walisong, tae kwon do di STIMART AMNI, pencak silat di UMK Kudus, bola basket di Udinus Semarang, tenis meja di Unisbank, karate di IKIP PGRI Semarang, bulu tangkis di USM, catur di Akpelni, futsal di STIKES Karya Husada, dan panjat tebing di Unimus.

Meski kompetisi akan berjalan ketat, baik Prof Dr SYP Sugiharto maupun Prof Dr Masrukhi mengimbau seluruh peserta menjunjung tinggi sportivitas sebagai nilai utama kompetisi. Menurut keduanya, menang kalah adalah keniscayaan. “Yang lebih penting, mahasiswa bisa meningkatkan kualitas personal supaya terus berkembang,” kata Prof DYP Sugiharto.

Pembukaan POM Regional berlangsung meriah dengan pertunjukan tari tradisional dari mahasiswa STIKES Karya Husada. Suasana semakin semarak  dengan aksi tae kwon do mahasiswa STIMART. Puncak acara pembukaan ditandai dengan atraksi drum band oleh mahasiswa STIMART AMNI.
