Praktik-praktik pendidikan di Indonesia harusnya mulai memperhatikan bagaimana membuat siswa menjadi agen moral yang efektif di masyarakat. “Character building is now becoming the world’s demand of what education should responsible,” ungkap Ranbir Singh Malik, seorang profesor dari Edith Cowan University Australia, dalam Seminar Nasional Matematika VII di Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unnes), Sabtu (26/10).

Ranbir Singh mengungkapkan bahwa Indonesia sedang menghadapi permasalahan moral yang cukup buruk, yakni banyaknya kasus korupsi dalam pemerintahan.

Selain Ranbir Singh Malik, seminar yang diselenggarakan atas kerja sama Program Pascasarjana Pendidikan Matematika dan Jurusan Matematika FMIPA Unnes itu juga menghadirkan Prof Didi Suryadi, pakar pendidikan matematika dari Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) Bandung dan Dr Rochmad, pakar pendidikan matematika dari Unnes.

Seminar dibuka oleh Dekan FMIPA Unnes, Prof Dr Wiyanto MSi. Dalam sambutannya, ia mengapresiasi keberhasilan panitia yang mampu menghadirkan ratusan peserta dari 10 provinsi di Indonesia, dari Jambi hingga Papua.

Seminar mengambil tema “Peran Matematika dan Pendidikan Matematika dalam Membangun Karakter Bangsa”. Dalam sambutannya, Wakil Ketua Panitia, Prof Dr St Budi Waluya MSi menyampaikan bahwa tema tersebut sejalan dengan amanat Kurikulum 2013 yang mulai dicanangkan pemerintah.

Prof Didi Suryadi pada kesempatan ini menyatakan, seringkali matematika hanya dipahami secara mekanis baik oleh siswa maupun guru. Padahal menurut Direktur Sekolah Pascasarjana UPI ini, matematika tidak hanya berhenti pada kemampuan berhitung prosedural.

“Guru harus memfasilitasi siswa agar dapat menginternalisasi nilai-nilai dalam kehidupan sehari-hari,” tandasnya.

Dalam dialog dengan peserta, terungkap bahwa matematika mendidik siapa pun yang mempelajarinya untuk jujur, teliti, dan taat asas. Dr Rochmad sebagai pembicara ketiga seminar menekankan pada pemikiran kritis dan kreatif yang menjadi karakteristik pembelajar matematika.

“Kebanyakan guru melupakan bagaimana memfasilitasi siswa untuk belajar berpikir kritis dan kreatif,” katanya.

Seminar ini dilanjutkan dengan sidang paralel  yang terbagi dalam 8 bidang ilmu, yaitu pendidikan matematika, analisis, aljabar, statistika, terapan, geometri, komputer, dan kombinatorika.
