“Apakah Yesus pernah berdiri di atas air?” tanya Prof Sukestiyarno PhD kepada siswa kelas IV C SD Bernardus Semarang, Selasa (7/1). Ia mengutip sebuah kisah dalam Alkitab (Lukas 5: 1-11). Dikisahkan Simon Petrus sedang menjala namun tidak dapat ikan. Yesus kemudian mengarahkan muridnya itu menjala di tempat lain.

Pertanyaan itu bukan muncul di kelas kerohanian Katolik, melainkan kelas Matematika. Memanfaatkan kisah-kisah dalam Alkitab, Prof Sukes memperkenalkan prinsip penggunaan bilangan negatif.

“Kalau titik Yesus berdiri adalah titik nol, ke atas berarti positif, kalau ke bawah berarti?” lanjut Prof Sukes dijawab serempak oleh siswa “Negatif.”

Apersepsi ini dipilih Prof Sukes agar pengetahuan keagamaan siswa sinkron dengan pengetahuan alam. Sebab, menurutnya, ilmu pengetahuan sejatinya berkaitan antara satu dengan yang lain. Integrasi pengetahuan dari berbagai bidang ilmu perlu dilakukan agar siswa memperolah pemahaman yang menyeluruh.

Merasa belum cukup, Prof Sukes kemudian melemparkan pertanyaan kepada sejumlah siswa. Kepada Patrick, misalnya, ia bertanya punya adik dan kakak atau tidak. Jawaban itu dijadikan “pintu masuk” untuk mengenalkan bilangan negatif.

“Kalau Patrick di posisi nol, kakak di posisi satu, maka adik Patrick di posisi negatif satu,” katanya.

Untuk menjelaskan konsep pengurangan dan penjumlahan bilangan negatiF, Prof Sukes kemudian mengajak siswa deret angka pada lantai keramik. Dimulai dari bilangan nol di tengah-tengah, siswa pertama menulis bilangan positif kea rah kanan. Adapun siswa kedua menulis bilangan negative kea rah kiri. Strategi ini digunakan karena bilangan adalah “benda” abstrak.

Setelah itu, ia munculkan sebuah soal. Dengan gerakan maju dan mundur, siswa kemudian menjumlahkan dan mengurangi dengan bilangan negatif. Ternyata, cara seperti itu membuat siswa dapat menjawab secara tepat. Tidak heran jika siswa berebut maju untuk mencoba menghitung dengan deretan angka yang tertulis di lantai itu.

Matematika Menyenangkan

Pembelajaran kemudian dilanjutkan dengan memanfaatkan “rel kodok”. Profesor telah menyiapkan rel dari sterofoam berisi lambang bilangan dari negatif sepuluh hingga sepuluh. Boneka kodok digunakan untuk mengilustrasikan penjumlahan dan pengurangan. Jika bilangan positif kodok maju, jika ditambah juga maju, jika dikurangi kodok balik arah, dna jika negatif kodok mundur.

Dengan permainan ini, siswa diperkenalkan prinsip pengurangan dengan bilangan negatif. Pada prinsipnya, pengurangan oleh bilangan negatif akan menjadi penjumlahan. Dengan rel kodok, siswa menjadi tahu asal muasal prinsip itu.

Wali kelas IVC C. Dasih Sayekti SSi mengakui, Matematika kerap menjadi momok bagi siswa. Namun, sejak Kurikulum 2013 diterapkan, pembalajaran Matematika bisa dikemas dengan lebih menyenangkan. Bahkan, sejak kurikulum itu diterapkan pada Juli tahun lalu, banyak perubahan yang terjadi di kelas.

“Di SD Beranrdus, Kurikulum 2013 diterapkan pada kelas I dan IV. Di sini pelajaran diasuh oleh masing-masing guru. Dulu, terasa sekali ada perbedaan saat terjadi pergantian pelajaran. Kalau sekarang, siswa justru tidak merasa ada pergantian pelajaran. Sebab, seluruh mata pelajaran terintegrasi secara tematik,” katanya.
