Rambutan peel has great benefits. Lecturer and researcher from the Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), Dr Lisdiana explains, rambutan peel can be processed to overcome cells damage caused by cigarette smoke.
Dr Lisdiana presented this research in international conferences in the field of herbal medicine in Bangkok, Thailand, Wednesday-Friday (25/27/1). The 2nd International Conference on Herbal and Traditional Medicine in 2017 “Value-Added of Herbs and Phytotherapy: Challenger for the 21st Century” was followed by 411 participants from 17 countries.
In the forum, Dr Lisdiana presented a paper entitled “The Effect of Rambutan Peel extract (Nephelium lappaceum L) to Total Leukocyte and histological of Rat Lungs Exposed by Cigarette Smoke”.
She said that the cells, tissues, and organs damage caused by cigarette smoke exposure is very dangerous and causing various diseases. In order to handle it, rambutan peels can be the antidote substance to improve the immunity conditions and lung tissue which was exposed by cigarette smoke.
Therefore, she believes that development of rambutan peel to prevent and to handle the damage has good prospects and very beneficial for the society.
Cassava Leaf and Papaya
In that forum, another UNNES Biology lecturer who also become the paper presenter was Dr dr Nugrahaningsih WH MKes. She presented the research about utilization of cassava leaves and papaya to overcome hypotension or low blood pressure.
She presented a scientific paper entitled “Mineral and Electrolyte Analysis of Manihot utilissima and Carica papaya Leaves: a Prospect of Anti Hypotension Agent”.
According to Nugrahaingsih, hypertension or low blood pressure is a disease which is suffered by mst of the people. There is no any modern medication for therapy of hypertension which opens a chance to develop herbal plants to become a medicine.
She adds, beside of becoming the attempt of environmental conservation, it is also the attempts of cultural conservation. Papaya leaves, publicly known as “jamu godhong kates” became the background of this medicine’s development.
