Pilihan Esma Akin (24) untuk belajar bahasa Arab di Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unnes) berbuah manis. Gadis asal Ayden, Turki, ini  merasa menemukan dua hal yang dicarinya: lingkungan yang religius dan dosen hebat. Dia berhasil lulus S1 dalam waktu 7 semester dengan melahirkan kamus Arab-Turki.

Keinginan untuk kuliah di Indonesia pertama kali muncul saat ia masih belajar di Madrasah Aliyah (MA) di Ayden. Ia dan keluarganya sepakat agar kuliah di negara yang religius. Pilihannya jatuh kepada Indonesia, negara dengan populasi Muslim terbesar di dunia. Alasan itu pula yang membuatnya tak memilih Eropa. Adapun negara-negara Arab tak ia pilih karena adanya potensi konflik politik.

Setelah memilih Indonesia, ia kemudian memilih Semarang.  Esma memilih kota ini karena relatif lebih nyaman, bebas macet. Setelah bertanya kepada teman-temannya, ia memilih Unnes. Terlebih, sejumlah mahasiswa Turki juga pernah kuliah yang dikenal sebagai Universitas Berwawasan Konservasi ini.

Dari Mus ke Ayden

Esma lahir di Kota Mus, kota di wilayah timur Turki. Saat anak-anak keluarganya pindah ke Ayden, kota di wilayah barat. Keluarganya adalah Muslim yang sangat taat. Ayahnya, Aydin Anadolu, yang bekerja sebagai mandor distributor bahan bangunan, selalu berpesan agar ia mempelajari Islam dengan serius. Nasihat itulah yang membuatnya memilih Indonesia sebagai tempat kuliah.

Sejak remaja ia sudah mantap ingin menjadi guru bahasa Arab. “Saya seorang Muslim, saya ingin mempelajari Al-Quran dengan baik. Ingin mempelajari isinya, ingin mengamalkannya. Karena itulah saya harus belajar bahasa Arab,” katanya, Senin (27/2). “Saya juga ingin jadi guru. Guru itu keren. Kalau jadi guru saya bisa bekerja, bisa jadi ibu, bisa jadi apa saja,” kata gadis kelahiran Januari 1992 ini.

Lantaran belum pernah ke Indonesia, pilihan Esma ke Indonesia sebenarnya sempat dikhawatirkan teman-temannya. Tetapi  sejak menginjakkan kaki di Indonesia, kekhawatiran teman-temannya tak terbukti. Terlebih, ia menemukan lingkungan religius seperti yang dicarinya.

“Selama kuliah saya tinggal di asrama. Semua teman-teman saya salat berjamaah. Setelah itu mereka juga ngaji. Saya meniru itu. Kalau setelah salat saya ngaji, menghapal Al-Quran sedikit demi sedikit. Ini membuat saya semakin taat kepada Islam. Di tempat saya, hal-hal seperti itu  belum tentu ada,” katanya. Ia juga merasa dimudahkan karena banyak makanan lezat yang halal.

Selain lingkungan religius, Esma juga senang karena bertemu dengan dosen-dosen hebat. Sebagian dosennya adalah lulusan Mesir yang menurutnya sangat baik dalam mengajar bahasa Arab. Mereka juga membimbing Esma dengan tekun.

Kamus Arab-Turki

Dosennya pula yang menyarankan Esma untuk mengembangkan kamus Arab-Turki. Ide penulisan kamus itu berasal dari Esma karena datang ke Indonesia tanpa kamus. Di negaranya sudah ada kamus, tetapi sangat tebal. Kamus itu sulit untuk dibawa ke mana-mana. Kalau yang tipis, lazimnya hanya kamus tematik.

Esma menulis kamus itu selama lima bulan. Ia mendata kata-kata dari bahasa Arab untuk diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Turki. Yang membuat kamusnya berbeda, Esma juga menyertakan contoh kalimat. “Kalau ada contohnya, orang bisa lebih paham cara memakai kosa kata itu,” katanya.

Esma akan membawa pulang kamus yang disusunnya. Setelah bekerja jadi guru kelak, ia akan menggunakannya sebagai bahan ajar. “Akan saya kembangkan jadi dua kali lipat. Kalau yang sekarang dari 25 bidang. Saya ingin kembangkan jadi 50 bidang,” kata anak kedua dari empat bersaudara ini.

Setelah belajar selama tujuh semester, Esma akan diwisuda pada Selasa (7/2). Menurutnya, wisuda itu akan jadi momen yang menyenangkan sekaligus menyedihkan baginya. Menyenangkan karena studinya selesai sangat cepat. Teman-temannya juga akan hadir menemaninya. Terlebih, ia terpilih menjadi salah satu dari tiga wisudawan terbaik. Tetapi itu juga akan membuatnya sedih karena kedua orang tuanya tak bisa datang.
