Rektor Unnes Prof Dr Fathur Rokhman MHum diminta berbicara tentang multikulturalisme di University of Auckland, Selandia Baru. Permintaan ini disampaikan Associate Dean (International) University of Acukland Dr John Hope PhD saat berkunjung ke Kampus Unnes Sekaran, Rabu (30/10).

Menurut Dr John Hope, Selandia Baru sedang mebutuhkan ahli multikulturalisme. Sebab, di negara itu terindikasi ada ketidakakuran antara penduduk berkulit putih dan penduduk asli Maori. Selain itu, Selandia Baru sedang menerima banyak penduduk baru dari Asia. Kajian tentang multikulturalisme diharapkan membantu pemerintah membangun kerukunan antarpenduduk.

“Wilayah negara kami hampir sama dengan Jepang, tapi jumlah warga negara kami hanya sekitar 4,3 juta orang. Jadi, kami akan menerima banyak penduduk baru,” kata John Hope. “Menurut sensus 2006, sebanyak 67,6% penduduk diketahui sebagai keturunan Eropa dan 14,6% Māori,” lanjutnya.

Dr John Hope tertarik mengundang Prof Fathur setelah mengetahui sejumlah riset yang dilakukan Rektor Unnes ini dalam beberapa tahun silam. Meski berlatar belakang pendidikan sosiolinguistik, pria kelahiran Banyumas 12 Desember 1966 ini banyak mengkaji keanekaragaman budaya.

Tahun 2000, misalnya, Prof Fathur melakukan penelitian tentang pemberdayaan masyarakat berspektif gender di Sulawesi Selatan. Tahun 2007 ia kembali meneliti pengembangan model pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia berwawasan multikultural di SMP. Pada tahun yang sama, ia juga mengembangkan model pendidikan multikultural di sekolah dengan membandingkan konteks pendidikan Indonesia dan Australia.

Menanggapi permintaan itu, Prof Fathur mengaku bangga dapat bertukar gagasan dengan universita lain. Menurutnya, hal ini hanya bagian kecil dari upaya Unnes menjadi universitas internasional.

“Visi Unnes memang menjadi universitas bertaraf internasional. Salah satu pilar yang menopang keinternasionalan itu adalah keilmuan,” katanya.
