Kalau ingin membuat sistem pendidikan yang maju dan berkualitas kuncinya ada di guru. Kualitas sistem pendidikan tidak mungkin lebih dari kualitas guru. sistem pendidikan yang terbaik memprioritaskan mutu guru dibandingkan ukuran rombel.

Artinya kalau dananya terbatas untuk sistem pendidikan di Indonesia atau di negara mana saja lebih baik kelas rombelnya lebih besar sedikit jumlah anak, dengan guru sedikit tapi berkualitas. Dibandingkan dengan lebih banyak rombel kecil sehingga membutuhkan banyak guru tapi kualitas gurunya kurang.

Mark Oliver Heyward PhD dari Governance and Management Advisor USAID Prioritas untuk Indonesia menyampaikan itu saat menjadi pembicara seminar nasional dengan tema “Strategi Mengembangkan Profesi Guru Berkelanjutan”, Selasa (12/5) yang diselenggarakan Fakultas Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unnes) di kampus Sekaran Gunungpati.

Nara sumber lain Dian Wahyuni SH MEd (Kepala Bidang Pengembangan Pendidik Pendidikan Dasar pada Pusat Pengembangan Profesi Pendidik BPSDMPK dan PMP Kemendikbud RI), Dr H Dinn Wahyudin MA (Ketua Bidang Pengembangan Profesi HIPKIN Pusat-Indonesia).

“Saya sebagai orang tua murid senang menyekolahkan anak saya yang sederhana, bisa dibawah pohon kalau gurunya berkualitas. Dari pada saya menyekolahkan anak saya di sekolahan yang bagus dan fasilitas sarana prasarana lengkap kelasnya kecil tapi banyak, namun gurunya kurang berkualitas,” kata Mark Oliver.

Bagaimana kita bisa menaikkan kualitas guru, kepala sekolah, dan pengawas dengan sitem pendidikan? Tanya Mark Oliver.

Menurut Mark Oliver, untuk menaikkan kualitas guru, kepala sekolah, dan pengawas pra jabatan dan dalam jabatan yakni dari rekrutmen calon guru, pendidikan guru, sertifikasi guru, pengembangan profesi, coaching (pendampingan atau pembinaan guru), dan jalur karir/intensif.
