Kondisi alam Kelurahan Kandri, Kecamatan Gunungpati, potensial dikembangkan menjadi desa wisata. Sumber daya alam berupa lahan pertanian, perikanan, dan sumber mata air berpadu dengan aktivitas masyarakat khas pedesaan. Potensi itu kini tengah dipetakan untuk dikembangkan menjadi desa wisata yang lebih menarik.

Pengembangan desa wisata Kandri dilakukan secara trpartid, melibatkan PT Pertamina, Pemerintah Kota Semarang, dan Universitas Negeri Semarang. Dengan prinsip partisipatif, pengembangan Desa Wisata Kandri juga melibatkan masyarakat, sejak penggalian kebutuhan hingga pelaksanaan,

“Keterlibatan masyarakat diharapkan mampu menumbuhkan sense of belonging masyarakat terhadap program yang dilaksanakan,” kata Sekretaris Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (LP2M) Prof Dr Etty Soesilowati kepada unnes.ac.id.

Tujuan utama kegiatan ini adalah menguatkan kegiatan desa wisata dengan memberdayakan dan mengarahkan masyarakat untuk dapat mengoptimalkan pengelolaan lahan pertaniandan perikanan. Selanjutnya mengenalkan model-model pengelolaan pertanian, peternakan dan perikanan dengan konsep eduwisata sehingga mampu meningkatkan perekonomian dan kesejahteraan masyarakat.

Pengembangan Desa Wisata Kandri dilakukan dengan membagi wilayah desa menjadi tiga zona. Zona A merupakan zona terdepat. Pada zona ini akan dibangun gapura selamat datang, kawasan parkir dan pasar ikan, saung pintar, taman, dan toilet.

Zona B merupakan kawasan utama untuk kegiatan perikanan dan budidaya tanaman buah yang bersifat tumpangsari. Pada zona ini pengunjung dapat melakukan aktivitas cara budidaya ikan air tawar, memancing, dan menangkap ikan di kolam.

Dalam rencana pengembangan, pada zona ini akan direvitalisasi 24 kolam, pembuatan gazebo, dan pembuatan talud sungai.

Adapun Zona C merupakan kawasan pertanian dan peternakan. Pada zona ini pengunjung dapat melakukan aktivitas belajar bercocok tanam, membudidayakan tanaman sayuran, belajar membibitkan tanaman, belajar mengolah pupuk kompos, dan wisata petik buah serta wisata perah susu sapi.

Untuk menunjang aktivitas itu, pada Zona C akan dibangun pengembangan lahan budidaya pertanian organik, pembibitan tanaman, serta sarana dan prasarana pengolahan pupuk kompos dari kotoran ternak.
